In 1855, the first long-distance telegraph message was sent in India between the cities of Calcutta (now Kolkata) and Agra, covering a distance of 1,300 km. The telegraph system in India was commissioned by the East India Company to cover a thirty-mile link from Calcutta to Diamond Harbour located on the Bay of Bengal.
