Having won the 1953 race, and the 1954 Indy 500 event, Bill Vukovich, one of the greatest racing drivers from the USA was killed while on his way to winning his third consecutive Indianapolis 500 title. Bob Sweikert won the race that was marred by the loss of Vukovich. This loss along with many other motor racing incidents around the world led to the formation of the United States Auto Club to review and sanction events.
