Elizabeth Gaskell is well-known for writing the first biography on Charlotte Bronte and for her novels – Cranford, Ruth, North and South, Sylvia’s Lovers, and Wives and Daughters. Before these novels, her first novel, Mary Barton – Tale of Manchester Life, was published anonymously in 1848.
