The death of a champion, Alberto Ascari. At the 1955 Monaco Grand Prix, Ascari had a crash at the harbour. However, the accident didn’t dampen his racing spirits. A few days later he was killed while testing a Ferrari sports car at Monza. The 1955 Monaco Grand Prix turned out to be the final Grand Prix for the 1952 and 1953 driver’s world champion. The death added to the financial woes Lancia was suffering – and they withdrew from racing – and their assets were transferred to Ferrari the following season.
