Born Rosa Mina Schärer, Lys Assia was the first winner of the Eurovision Song Contest representing Switzerland. Her song, Refrain, was co-written by Émile Gardaz and Géo Voumard. The song was sung in French. She also sang a German song, Das alte Karussell in the same event.
