Based on the play of the same name by Samson Raphaelson, the Jazz Singer won an honorary Academy Award (Darryl F. Zanuck won it for producing) at the first awards in 1929. Why? It is the first feature-length movie to have lip-synchronous singing and speech incorporated in many of the scenes.
