Madame Sousatzka is a 1962 novel by Bernice Rubens based on the real-life experiences of Bernice’ brother Harold Rubens and his piano teacher Maria Levinskaya, who inspired the character of Madame Sousatzka. The novel was made into a 1988 movie of the same title. Bernice Rubens became the first woman to win the Booker Prize in 1970 for her novel, The Elected Member.
