For the 1954 Formula One season, the Argentine driver Juan Manuel Fangio had a signed contract with Mercedes. Since the silver arrow cars were not ready in time for the European leg of the season, he decided to continue racing with Maserati 250F at the Belgian Grand Prix. Though 14 cars had lined up for the race, a 15th car, Emmanuel de Graffenried’s Maserati was on the starting grid, this was to secure the authentic footage for the upcoming Kirk Douglas movie ‘The Racers’.
