Massachusetts Bay Colony followed Plymouth Colony to become the second major settlement in the region of New England. John Winthrop, an English lawyer served as the governor for 12 years. The primary reason for his move to the New World was the crackdown on all the Puritans in England after King Charles I ascended the throne in 1625.
