Berengaria of Navarre was the eldest daughter of Sancho VI of Navarre (Basque-based kingdom) and Sancha of Castile. She went on to become an English queen (1191-1199) through her marriage to Richard I. The traditional description of her states that “she was the only English queen to have never set foot in England during her time as Richard’s consort.” She was portrayed by Loretta Young in the 1935 movie ‘The Crusades’.
