On April 9, 1731, an English sailor Robert Jenkins was reputedly cut off by a Spanish captain off Havana, Cuba. The incident triggered a series of hostilities that resulted in a conflict between Britain and Spain for close to nine years. The conflict was given the name ‘War of Jenkins’ Ear’ by the Scottish writer Thomas Carlyle in 1858. Guerra del Asiento is the Spanish name for the conflict.
