Monsieur Bergeret is a 1901 French novel written by Anatole France. The plot was inspired by the real-life incidents of the Dreyfus affair – about Alfred Dreyfus, a French army officer of Jewish descent who was convicted of espionage. Dreyfus was later set free after having found all the allegations to be baseless. Anatole France was one of the supporters who stood behind Dreyfus during the trial along with influential writers such as Emile Zola. France won the 1921 Nobel Prize in Literature for his lifetime contributions in promoting the Gallic culture.
