In the 1973 UEFA Cup finals, Liverpool took on the German club Borussia Mönchengladbach and won 3-2 aggregate score over two legs. Four years later, both teams made their first appearance in a European Cup final. Liverpool had won the UEFA Cup the previous year as well and they clinched their first European Cup beating the German club 3-1 thereby making Bob Paisley the first manager to win the UEFA Cup and European Cup in consecutive years.
