The Modern Breakthrough was a literary period that gained momentum towards the end of 19th century in Scandinavia. During this time, scholars revolved against traditional themes such as romanticism and instead focussed on realistic themes thereby opening the liberal views on topics such as religion, sexuality, and scientific breakthroughs. Two of the Danish writers Karl Gjellerup and Henrik Pontoppidan shared the 1917 Nobel Prize for their work during and post the Modern Breakthrough period.
