In 2012, an official from St. Etienne club sent an inquiry to the Hampden museum asking whether the goalposts might be available for either purchase or hire. The French club was building a museum and wanted to have these goal posts as an exhibit, which they bought a year later for €20,000. Why these goal posts? Let us rewind to the 1976 European Cup final that was played at Hampden Park, Glasgow. Bayern Munich won their third consecutive European Cup by 1-0, however, many Les Verts fans still believe they would have won the match if not for a pair of pesky goalposts, which they termed it as ‘Les poteaux carres’ (the square posts).
