The 1951 movie Peking Express and the 1942 movie Night Plane from Chungking were remakes of the 1932 popular movie Shanghai Express. The 1923 incident of a Shandong warlord capturing 25 Westerners and 300 Chinese as hostages on a Shanghai-Beijing express train inspired Henry Hervey’s short story ‘Sky Over China’ on which the movie was based. It was one of the seven movies that featured the partnership of actress Marlene Dietrich and director Josef von Sternberg.
