Hans Müller-Einigen was a German writer and one of his novels Nux, der Prizgemahl was adapted into an operetta in 1907 by Oscar Straus. The operatta served as the inspiration for the 1931 musical comedy The Smiling Lieutenant, that starred Claudette Colbert and Mirian Hopkins. Directed by Ernst Lubitsch, it was Paramount’s biggest grosser of that year.
