In the 1963 European Cup final (now UEFA Champions League), Benfica played their third consecutive finals. Unlike the previous two occasions, the first-time finalist AC Milan came from a one-goal deficit to win 2-1 and thereby became the first Italian club to win the European Cup. Cesare Maldini, father of Paolo Maldini was the captain of the winning team.
