The 1962 European Cup (now UEFA Champions League) saw Benefica retain their title by defeating Real Madrid in a thrilling 8-goal final. Ferenc Puskás scored a hattrick for Real Madrid, which eventually was in vain as Benefica triumphed 5-3. Puskás’ hattrick became the first instance of a player scoring a hattrick in a European Cup final for a losing team. He had previously scored 4 goals in the 1960 finals win over Eintracht Frankfurt.
