The Lasker Foundation was founded by Albert Lasker, an American businessman and his wife Mary Woodard Lasker, who became popular as a health activist. In 1945, through Lasker foundation, they established an award that awarded in four categories – Basic medical research, clinical medical research, Public service, and Special Achievement in Medical Science (from 1994).
