José Echegaray was the 1904 Nobel Prize winner in Literature. Known for his composition of Spanish drama, he was a respected civil engineer and a mathematician besides being a dramatist. He was the first Spaniard to win the Nobel Prize and he was jointly awarded the 1904 Nobel Prize in Literature with the poet Frédéric Mistral.
