Jimmy Murphy missed the trip to Belgrade with Manchester United for the second leg of the quarter-final clash against Red Star Belgrade. After the Munich air disaster, the assistant-coach to Matt Busby took on the leadership role to manage the team’s greatest crisis until the end of the 1958 season. He missed the trip to Belgrade as he was occupied with the coaching duties for Wales against Israel on the same night as the Belgrade match. Wales qualified for the 1958 World Cup courtesy of the win.
