At the second Academy Awards, The Broadway Melody won the Best Picture Oscar, thereby becoming the first sound film to win an Oscar. It was the first musical released by MGM and was also the first all-talking musical. Coincidentally, a silent version of the movie was released since a few of the theatres were not equipped with the sound equipment.
