After the success of the inaugural European Cup, the second season saw new countries participating in the tournament. The English FA had previously not sent Chelsea in the first edition as they felt it would be a distraction. However, Manchester United thought otherwise and being the reigning English champions, they became the first English team to participate in the European Cup. Their run came to an end in the semifinals when they lost to the eventual winners, Real Madrid.
