The Caribbean country ‘Antigua and Barbuda’ gets its name from the Spanish terms for ‘ancient’ and ‘bearded’. And, what was it known before this? Christopher Columbus named Antigua as Santa Maria la Antigua, named in the honour of the Spanish Seville Cathedral. However, the debate remains as to what the locals refer to the place – In the Carib language, Antigua is known as Waladli meaning ‘Land of Fish Oil’ while Barbuda is known as ‘Wa’omoni’ meaning ‘Land of the herons’.
