Banana originated in Southeast Asia and the Arabs took the fruit to Middle-East and Africa and the fruit was introduced to the world in the 16th century by Spanish and Portuguese traders. The name ‘banana’ gets its name from the West African word, banaana, which in turn gets it from the Arabic word ‘banan’ meaning ‘finger’.
