In the 1978 World Cup match against Scotland, the Dutchman Rob Rensenbrink scored a penalty which happened to be the 1000th FIFA World Cup goal. 28 years later, Swedish Marcus Allbäck scored the 2000th FIFA World Cup goal against England in the 2006 World Cup. At the start of the 2018 World Cup, a total of 2389 goals have been scored.
