Zambia, an African country became independent from the British rule in 1964 and was known by the name of Northern Rhodesia prior to its independence. Until 1991, the country was ruled by one legal party (rest of the parties were banned) known as the United National Independence Party (UNIP) and the country was under the Presidentship of Kenneth Kaunda. The country had its first multi-party democratic elections in 1991.
