In 1780, a new horse race was run at Epsom Downs in the south of England. The race was named the Derby after Edward Stanley, 12th Earl of the Derby. The race is held over a distance of 1 mile, 4 furlongs, and 10 yards (2.4 km) and is restricted to three-year-old colts and fillies.
