In the early part of the 17th century, King James I granted charters to two companies to establish permanent settlements in North America. Together, in 1607, the Plymouth Company and the London Company established the first permanent English colony known as the Colony and Dominion of Virginia. With time, the number of English colonies expanded to thirteen.
