The first written mention of the word ‘Hussar’ is from a 15th-century Hungarian document. Some scholars point the origin to be that of Roman and the word was re-introduced to Western Europe after the collapse the of Roman empire in the west. However, going by the dictionary, the term ‘hussar’ is from the Hungarian word ‘huszár’ meaning ‘brigand’ (owing to the shock and sudden attack tactics employed against the Ottoman army).
