At the 1964 Winter Olympics, the former Soviet skater, Lidiya Skoblikova won all the four medals available in speed skating, thereby becoming the first athlete to win four individual gold medals in Winter Olympics. Her record stood for another 16 years when Eric Heiden won five gold medals in short skating at the 1980 Winter Olympics.
