The 1940 edition of Winter Olympics was initially scheduled to be held in Sapporo, Japan. However, war with China forced Japan to express their inability to host the event. Germans volunteered with Garmisch-Partenkirchen, but few months later, WW II broke out and the Olympics was cancelled.
