At the 1936 Winter Olympics, alpine skiing events were introduced for the first time. However, there was a controversy, IOC overruled the FIS (Ski Federation) and declared that ski instructors could not take part in the event as they were deemed, professionals. Many of the Austrian and Swiss skiers boycotted the event as a result.
