Prior to Pyeongchang 2018, there were two Asian cities that previously hosted the Winter Olympics. In 1972, Sapporo, Japan became the first Asian city and in 1998, Nagano, Japan became the second Asian city to host the Winter Olympics. Incidentally, South Korea became the 12th country to host the Winter Olympics.
