It has been 45 odd years since Melbourne became synonymous with Australian Open tennis. Since its inception in 1905, and until 1926, the annual tournament (Australasian championships) was shared among different cities in Australia and New Zealand. From 1927 until 1971 different cities in Australia served as hosts.
