In 1988, the Australian Open moved to a new venue, Melbourne Park (then Flinders Park). Prior to that, it was hosted at the Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club. With the change of venue, there was also a change in the surface. Since the move to Melbourne Park, Australian Open has been a hard court event and until 1988, it was played on grass courts.
