The kingdom ‘Ashanti’ (Asante) gets its name from the Akan language ‘twi’ spoken in Ghana. It translates to ‘because of war’. Earlier, Asante was an Empire that ruled over what is now Ghana from 1670. The Kingdom currently survives as a constitutionally protected in union with the Republic of Ghana.
