A mixture of nitric acid (1 part) to hydrochloric acid (3 parts) is called ‘Aqua Regia’. It gets its name from Latin meaning ‘royal water’ as alchemists used this mixture to dissolve precious metals such as gold. Its preparation is first attributed to a Persian alchemist Jabir Ibn Al-Hayyan.
