In the years between 1927 and 1957, Italy hosted an open endurance road race (with many top car manufacturers taking part) before it was banned after a fatal crash that took the lives of Alfonso de Portago, his navigator, and nine spectators. The race was revived in 1977 under the new name of ‘Mille Miglia Storica’. The name ‘Mille Miglia’ translates to thousand miles in English.
