Photo of Mato Grosso in Brazil

Located in the Western part of Brazil, Mato Grosso is one of the 26 states (they have one federal district) of Brazil. The name is derived from the Portuguese word for ‘thick bushes’. In 1977, Mato Grosso was split into two parts, the other state in the southern part was aptly named Mato Grosso do Sul (Thick Bushes of the South).
