John Henry O’Hara was an American writer who is known for his novels such as BUtterfield 8 and Appointment in Samarra. Appointment in Samarra was his first novel published in 1934. The story revolved around the Gibbsville elitists, in particular, the life of Julian English. The novel was controversial at that time due to its sexual content, however, sixty four years later the novel was listed as one of the 100 best English novels by Modern Library, an American publishing company.
