Caroline Herschel, the famous German astronomer was the first woman to be awarded a Gold Medal from the Royal Astronomical Society in 1828. Together with her brother, William Herschel she discovered thousands of astronomical objects. The asteroid 281 Lucretia is named after her and so is a crater C. Herschel on the Moon.
