During the time of the Crusades, a sect of the Muslims under the leadership of Hasan ibu-al-Sabbah had gathered a reputation of killing opponents after intoxicating themselves with hashish. Thus the Arabic word for ‘hashish’ user ‘hashishiyyin’ came to be known as ‘assassin’ through series of mispronunciation in English.
