On 14 July 1808, Marie Paradis became the first woman to climb Mont Blanc, which happens to be Europe’s highest mountain. She achieved this feat with the help of the famous mountain guide Jacques Balmat. She hailed from Chamonix, which at that time belonged to the Kingdom of Sardinia.
