The Amazon river in South America was called by the Spanish name Rio Santa Maria de la Mar Dulce. It was renamed in 1541 by Francisco de Orellana, after encountering the local female warriors belonging to the Tapuyas tribe. Few etymologists claim, the Amazon name comes from the native Tupi word meaning ‘wave’.
