FACT FOOD #927

The monarchy in Brazil was established in 1822, when Portugal’s crown prince, Dom Pedro, defied his Parliament and proclaimed an independent Brazil under his rule. In 1831, Emperor Pedro I abdicated in favor of his five-year-old son and returned to Portugal. His son Pedro II ruled from 1841 until 1889 when he was deposed in Brazil. Pedro II left for Europe and he died two years later.
