The word ‘Amazon’ refers to the tribe of female warriors in Scythia and the origins are not clear. Popular sources point to Iranian word ‘ha-maz-an’ meaning ‘fighting together’ and in folk etymology propagated by Greeks, the word comes from ‘a’ (without) and mazos (breasts), and there is a story that Amazons cut off one breast so they could draw bowstrings effectively. Well, that story is a myth!
