In 1967, the Federal Communications Commission met with AT&T in order to pick a number for nationwide emergency. 9-1-1 was the number they agreed upon and since 1968 it has been a go-to number in the United States and in other countries for an emergency. Interestingly, in 1950 a film-noir ‘Dial 1119’ was released where 1119 was used as the police emergency number.
