The source of the river Niger happens to be the Guinea Highlands located in southeastern part of Guinea. It is known as ‘Jeliba’ meaning ‘great river’ in Mandig and the name ‘Niger’ was given by Leo Africanus (from Berber word ger-n-ger meaning river of rivers), an African diplomat who wrote it in his description of Africa book in 1550. Republic of Niger, a landlocked country in Western Africa takes its name from the Niger river.
